Ablative armor is a type of protective hull plating used on starships, which possessed a capability for rapidly dissipating the energy impacts from directed energy weapon fire. The armor plates disintegrate under fire, becoming a cloud of dust which absorbs the remaining energy thereby preventing a majority of it from reaching the hull. Key areas of the ship, such as the bridge and main engineering, have a double layer of armor for extra protection.
